Try practicing some of these common Game Designer job interview questions:

1.  If you notice a current design experiences game lag, how would you fix it?

How to answer:  Your ability to identify and solve technical issues can help the interviewer understand how you take approaches to contribute to ongoing improvements that support the demands of consumers. Consider the approaches you use to evaluate the functionality and performance of online gameplay and how you would improve performance issues.

Answer:  “My first approach to game lag is to check the performance settings. If I can’t lower the performance output, I evaluate the hardware or device where the game operates. Because outdated hardware can also cause game lag, I have implemented pop-up reminders in games with a heavier load when the performance speed reaches a specific level, which gives game players notice to update their hardware to support better gameplay.”

2.  Can you describe a time when you implemented feedback to improve your design structure?

How to answer:   Being open to constructive criticism and using feedback to strengthen your design quality are desirable traits that the interviewer is likely to assess. When answering this question, use an example to describe feedback previous employers or clients provided and how you used these suggestions to improve your performance in game design and development.

Answer:  “I recently created an entire game design according to the suggestions of players who were already familiar with the previous game versions. Using player feedback helped me create a design that incorporated more puzzle challenges and led to improvements in the reward structure for the new installment. Because of these improvements, my team was able to launch a successful mobile game that increased our company’s subscription rate by 14%.”

3.  What factors would you consider when developing test specifications for quality assurance?

How to answer:  This question can help interviewers gain insight into your ability to analyze information, consider business and customer needs and make decisions that enhance the success of your projects. In your answer, give examples that highlight your attention to detail, critical thinking and analytical skills. It’s also important to include aspects of your decision-making process when testing your designs for quality.

Answer:   “The first things I look at are the specifications for the game. In previous roles, I usually receive a document that outlines the storyline, character profiles, setting ideas and suggestions for challenge features. Depending on the game genre and intended audience and platforms, I also consider how the programming should support the visual design.”

Not every question you will encounter when interviewing for Game Designer’s position will be related to video game design supportive job. But those are the common topics interviewer can ask for selecting qualified candidate.
