Try practicing some of these common Transportation Managers job interview questions:

1.  What makes you the ideal candidate for this role?

How to answer:  Interviewers may ask this question to see how you can advocate for yourself. Hiring managers may interview several other candidates for the same position, so they like to see what makes you more impressive compared to everyone else. To answer this question, provide some of your strengths and skills as a transportation manager.

Answer: “I believe that my qualifications make me the ideal candidate for this role. I not only have a bachelor’s degree in business, but I also have six years of experience in transportation management. In the past two years, I’ve specifically assisted the senior transportation manager in hopes of soon earning a leadership role. I also have excellent leadership skills, so I believe I can make a strong manager.”

2.  Tell me how you handle stress as a transportation manager.

How to answer:   As a manager, you may encounter some stressful situations. Due to this, employers typically like to know how well you can handle stress. They may prefer to hire a candidate who can control stressful situations successfully. You can answer this question by giving a real example of how you handled a stressful event in the past.

Answer:  “In my last role, the distribution warehouse had several fast-approaching deadlines. Additionally, a few employees had time off or didn’t come in for various reasons. Although I wasn’t in a leadership position, I assisted my manager by working extended hours. First, we developed a realistic plan for completing the orders. Then, we asked for extra help from other teams.”

3.  How would you evaluate the transportation team’s performance?

How to answer:  Hiring managers may ask this question since a transportation manager usually oversees a team of employees. Employers want to ensure that they’re hiring someone who’s qualified in transportation and distribution, along with leadership. To answer this question, describe your process for evaluating your team’s performance. Try to be specific so the interviewer can visualize your processes.

Answer:   “First, I would schedule individual meetings with each team member to determine their goals and how they define success in their role. Then, I would combine their answer with my expectations as a manager to create an evaluation test. I would evaluate their performance based on this guide and their weekly quotas. From there on, I would schedule monthly meetings to discuss their performance.”

Not every question you will encounter when interviewing for a Transportation Managers position will be related to a transportation industry supportive job. But those are the common topics interviewer can ask for selecting a qualified candidate.
