1.  Are you comfortable working with hazardous materials?

 

How to answer:  Marine engineers may be required to work with hazardous materials, such as fuel and oil. Employers ask this question to make sure you have the necessary experience working with these materials. In your answer, explain that you are comfortable working with hazardous materials. Explain how you would handle a situation where you were not familiar with the material.

 

Answer:  “I am very comfortable working with hazardous materials. I worked at my previous job for three years before we started using any hazardous materials. When we did start using them, A training helped me to use them safely. If I had been hired after they began using hazardous materials, I would have taken additional safety courses to learn more about them.”

 

2.  Do you have experience working with marine boilers?

 

How to answer:   Marine boilers are a type of boiler that is used to generate steam for the propulsion system on ships. Boilers can be dangerous, so it’s important to have experience working with them before you apply for this position. Your answer should include information about your previous experience and how you handled any challenges that came up.

 

Answer:  “I do have some experience working with marine boilers. In my last role as a marine engineer, I was responsible for maintaining all of the ship’s boilers. This included checking the temperature levels and making sure there were no leaks or other issues. If there were problems, I would call in a professional to fix them.”

 

 

3.  If the ship’s propeller stopped working while traveling through a dangerous area, what would be your immediate course of action?

                                                          

How to answer:  This question is a great way to test your problem-solving skills and ability to make quick decisions. Your answer should show the interviewer that you can think critically under pressure, prioritize tasks and communicate clearly with others.

 

Answer:   “If the ship’s propeller stopped working while traveling through a dangerous area, I would first assess the situation and determine if there are any other propulsion systems available to get us out of danger. If not, I would immediately call for help from nearby ships or coast guard vessels. Then, I would instruct my crew on how to steer the ship using its rudder until we reach safety.”
