Try practicing some of these common Food Stylists job interview questions:

1.  Describe your experience with food presentation.

How to answer:  The interviewer may ask this question to learn more about your creativity and presentation skills. Use examples from experience that show you can create visually appealing dishes for customers.

Answer:  “In my last position, I was responsible for creating the menu each week. I would start by looking at seasonal produce and deciding what ingredients we could use in our dishes. Then, I would plan out the meals based on how many people we were expecting that night. For example, if it was a busy Friday night, I would make sure there were plenty of appetizers and entrees available. If it was a slower night, I would focus more on making the meal special with unique flavors or presentations.”

2.  Which kitchen equipment are you most comfortable using?

How to answer:   This question can help the interviewer determine your comfort level with various kitchen equipment. It can also show them which skills you have developed over time and how they may be useful in this role. When answering, consider listing a few pieces of equipment that you are comfortable using and those that you would like to learn more about.

Answer:  “I am most comfortable using a variety of knives, including paring, chefs, and serrated knives. I’ve been working on my knife skills for several years now, so I feel confident using these tools. However, I would love to learn more about other types of knives, such as Japanese knives, cleavers, and steak knives.”

3.  How would you describe the role of a food stylist to someone who has no experience in the food service industry?

How to answer:  This question is a great way to show your interviewer that you understand the role of a food stylist and can explain it in an easy-to-understand way. Use this opportunity to highlight some of the creative skills, knowledge, and abilities required for success as a food stylist.

Answer:   “A food stylist is someone who has extensive experience working in food presentation and understands how to create presentable delicious dishes from scratch. They are also able to work with other team members to ensure they have all the ingredients needed to prepare meals for customers. A food stylist should be passionate about cooking and creative mind to enjoy decorating foods.”
