1. What are the signs and symptoms of a fracture? What is your treatment plan for a patient with a fracture?

How to answer:  An interviewer may ask this question to assess your knowledge of orthopedic injuries and how you treat them. Use examples from your experience to explain what a fracture is, the signs and symptoms of one, and how you would treat it.

Answer:  “Fractures are breaks in bones that can be either open or closed. The signs and symptoms of a fracture include pain, swelling, bruising, tenderness, and deformity. I always recommend my patients with fractures get an X-ray to confirm their diagnosis. Depending on the severity of the injury, I will prescribe rest, ice, compression, and, elevation for at least two weeks. After that, I will have them start physical therapy exercises.”

2. There is a high volume of patients waiting to see you. How would you manage your time to ensure you see everyone?

How to answer:  This question is a great way to assess your time management skills and ability to prioritize tasks. When answering this question, it can be helpful to describe the steps you would take to ensure that all patients are seen promptly while still maintaining quality care.

Answer:  “I would first ask my team for their help with scheduling appointments so I could see as many patients as possible during each workday. Then, I would make sure to arrive at work early enough to prepare for each patient’s appointment by reviewing their medical history and performing any necessary pre-surgery tests. Finally, I would try to stay late after work if any patients needed to reschedule or if there was an emergency.”

3. We want to improve our patient satisfaction scores. What strategies would you recommend to help us reach our goals?

How to answer:  Patient satisfaction is an important metric for many healthcare facilities. Employers ask this question to see if you have experience improving patient satisfaction scores and how you did it. In your answer, explain what strategies you used in the past to improve these scores.

Answer:   “I would recommend starting with a survey of patients before implementing any changes. This way, we can find out what they like about our facility and what areas need improvement. Then, I would implement small changes at first to make sure they’re effective. For example, I might change the temperature of the waiting room or rearrange the furniture. After making several small changes, I would do another survey to see if there are more significant improvements that could be made.”
