Try practicing some of these common Nurse Midwives job interview questions:

1.  How would you describe the relationship between a nurse midwife and a patient?

How to answer:  The interviewer may ask you this question to assess your interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with patients. Your answer should demonstrate that you can listen to a patient’s concerns, empathize with them and provide compassionate care.

Answer:  “I believe the relationship between a nurse midwife and their patient is very important. Because it allows me to understand my patients’ needs and preferences. I try to make sure that each of my patients feels comfortable talking to me about any questions or concerns they have. When I first meet a patient, I explain what procedures we will be performing during their appointments. How long each appointment will last? This helps my patients feel more prepared for their appointments.”

2.  What is the most important thing that a nurse midwife can do to help a patient feel comfortable and safe?

How to answer:   Interviewers may ask this question to learn more about your interpersonal skills and how you can help patients feel comfortable. When answering, it can be helpful to think of a specific time when you helped a patient feel safe or calm.

Answer:  “The most important thing that I can do for my patients is to listen to them. If they are feeling scared or nervous, the best way to make them feel better is by letting them know that I understand their concerns and will take care of them. For example, at my last job, I had a patient who was very anxious about giving birth. She told me she felt like no one understood her fears, but after we talked for a while, she started to feel much calmer.”

3.  If a patient came to you with a concern about a new symptom, how would you help them understand the diagnosis?

How to answer:  This question can help interviewers understand how you communicate with patients and their families. It also helps them assess your medical knowledge and ability to explain complex concepts in a way that is easy for patients to understand. When answering this question, try to demonstrate your communication skills and your ability. Eventually, you can break down complicated information into simple terms.

Answer:   “When a patient comes to me with a new symptom, I always start by asking about the symptoms they have experienced up until now. This allows me to get an idea of what has been going on with their health so far. And also gives me a baseline from which to work. Then, I will ask them questions about the new symptom. Determine if it is something serious or just a side effect of another medication. If it’s something more serious, I will explain the diagnosis as simply as possible. Moreover, still giving them all the details.”
