Try practicing some of these common Ski Patrollers job interview questions:

1.  How would you handle a situation where two guests are arguing about who has the right of way on the slopes?

How to answer:  This question can help interviewers assess your conflict resolution skills and ability to work with guests. Use examples from past experiences where you helped resolve a disagreement between two people or groups of people.

Answer:  “In my last role as a ski patroller, I encountered this situation quite often. In one instance, I was patrolling the slopes when I noticed two skiers arguing about who had the right of way on the slope. One skier insisted that they were going downhill and therefore had the right of way. On the other skier argued that they were traveling uphill and should have the right of way.

I approached both skiers and asked them to explain their side of the story. After hearing both sides, I explained that there is no set rule for determining who has the right of way. Instead, it’s important to be aware of other skiers and snowboarders around you so you don’t collide with anyone else. The skiers agreed and apologized to each other.”

2.  What is the proper protocol for responding to an avalanche?

How to answer:   The interviewer may ask you a question like this to assess your knowledge of the proper procedures for responding to an avalanche. Use examples from your experience or research about how to respond to avalanches and what steps to take when doing so.

Answer:  “The first step in responding to an avalanche is to determine if there’s actually been one. If I see debris on the slope, hear loud cracking noises or notice that snow has accumulated at a higher rate than usual, then it’s likely that an avalanche has occurred. Once I’ve determined that an avalanche has happened, my next step is to call out to anyone who might be buried under the snow. Then, I’ll use a transceiver to locate them.”

3.  How well do you perform in emergency situations when you are under pressure?

How to answer:  Ski patrollers often need to make quick decisions in emergency situations. Employers ask this question to learn more about your ability to perform under pressure and how you react to it. In your answer, explain that you are able to stay calm when faced with a stressful situation. Share an example of a time when you had to make a decision quickly while working as a ski patroller or another job where you were responsible for the safety of others.

Answer:   “I have experience performing well under pressure. When I was a lifeguard at my local pool, there was once a situation where two children got into a fight on the playground. One child fell off the jungle gym and hit their head on the ground. I immediately assessed the situation and called for backup. Then, I helped the other child get up and checked them over before calling 911.”

Not every question you will encounter when interviewing for Ski Patrollers position will be related to promote mountain safety supportive job. But those are the common topics interviewer can ask for selecting qualified candidate.
