1. What steps do you take to help professionals change careers?
How to answer: A hiring manager may ask this question to learn more about your process for helping clients and whether you find it effective. Changing careers is a major decision for any professional, so it’s important to help them manage it from start to finish. Remember to provide clear steps for helping these clients in your response.
Answer: “The first step I take when a client tells me they want to switch careers is to ask them why. I want to make sure they feel confident in their decision and use their response to guide the following steps. Next, I ask them to identify specific goals and how this career change could help them reach them. Then, I give them some financial worksheets to help them ensure they have resources and set a salary range for their new job. Finally, I help them update their resume, find job openings and practice interview questions.”
2. Which aptitude tests do you use when advising your clients?
How to answer: Aptitude tests are an important tool for learning about your clients and matching them to suitable career paths, but multiple tests serve different purposes. Learning about the tests you use when working with clients can tell hiring managers about your ability to use resources efficiently. Consider explaining why you prefer the tests you use when answering this question.
Answer: “Aptitude tests can be very helpful when I’m helping clients, but some are better for specific situations. The two I use most frequently are the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI, and Motivational Appraisal of Personal Potential, or MAPP. The MBTI is useful because it can help clients learn more about themselves and the types of jobs they might find fulfilling, and the MAPP identifies potential careers that could be a good fit for the client. I might administer one or both tests depending on the phase of the client’s career and their professional goals.”
3. What do you think are the most important qualities for a career counselor?
How to answer: Employers often have specific qualifications they want in candidates who apply for a career counselor role. They may ask you this question to see if the traits you value align with their expectations. When you answer this question, consider giving an example of how these qualities have allowed you to connect with clients.
Answer: “I think the most important qualities for a career counselor are compassion, patience, and communication skills. It’s important to understand the position your clients are in when they visit you. Some may face significant challenges because they’re looking for direction, and some may have big ideas they don’t know how to approach. Managing each circumstance by getting to know the person, suggesting specific steps for making progress in their professional development, and being patient while they figure out what works and what doesn’t are all essential in this role.”
